The view is a tiny bit difference with age and more performances. Ease in by sharing an interview from a few years ago.

A client who is an artist herself (author) was helping a budding author working on a (now published) book (wonderful, meaningful book, "Super Jake & the King of Chaos"). The one of the main characters was a budding magician, the call went out on line and I was able to answer a few questions for author Naomi Milliner and had the pleasure to perform at the book release for Super Jake & the King of Chaos .

Q&A With Illusions by Vick
1) You reference “very challenging” past performances – could you discuss one of them?
For 3 years I was part of the live entertainment at a Movie Theater Multi-plex (24 screens).
The theater complex was very popular but had patrons waiting upwards of an hour to see their movie. The theater thought live entertainment would be a good idea. We (myself, another magician and 2 stand up comics) did some crazy stuff. At first it was incredibly challenging, walking into a theater of 500 who have been waiting in their seats for 20 minutes for the film to start, they have no idea what you are there for and then try entertaining.
After 6 months we were (somewhat of) a hit (patrons would come in and ask for us and the company tried to replicate what we were doing in their other multi-plexes).
For the next 2.5 years it was just myself and 1 stand up comic. We created characters and played characters from hit films (launching a side business of appearing as Professor Snape).
We were given free rein to preform what we wanted. We wrote our own scripts, became more skilled at improv and did our own costuming.
There is nothing like the experience of performing a new routine 25+ times a day, 3 days a week for live audiences.
On top of that we had to keep the material fresh as there were patrons who came to the theater every week.

For 6 months I was the featured Illusionist in a 1940’s theme weekly burlesque review at a nightclub in Washington, DC.
Imagine being the magician on before the very popular featured burlesque artist, in front of inebriated patrons, in a DC nightclub where patrons are paying $40 for a seat. 2- 3 times nightly.
I was lucky and it went well.
These challenging situations gave me great experience that you can’t get any other way. To be good a magician has to have a place to be bad first, I already had that, these challenges made me a very good performer good very quickly

2) Who are your favorite magicians, and why?
Teller ~ (of Penn & Teller) he’s brilliant, incredibly talented, dedicated and a great man.
S.H. Sharpe ~ Sharpe wrote the most important books ever on performing magic and theory, absolutely brilliant.
Rocco (Silano) ~ One of the most real performers anywhere, the man you see on the stage is the man you get in real life. Had the opportunity to speak with Rocco for a bit after a lecture he gave. Funny, insightful, smart and very well versed in magic.
Denny Haney ~ Denny performed all over the world for 30 years, then semi-retired and opened a magic studio (magic shop). His caring and passion for the art are evident. He won’t sell poor quality effects and he’s more concerned about helping someone in the art than making a buck.

*On January 23, 2019 our world got a little darker as one of it’s brightest shining lights, Denny Haney left. Am incredibly fortunate to learn from and to be friends with Denny. I owe Denny more than I could ever give back, so the thing to do is keep performing and sharing the gifts Denny shared and keep Denny’s memory alive.
this was written for a magic forum on FB,
rough view behind the curtain and/or about creativity

The difference between tricks and routines
Or how we take tricks and build a routine
And why we need brick and mortar magic shops
Many years ago when starting out in the magic
I was thinking about an opener
and talking to Denny Haney in Denny and Lee's magic studio
He suggested I simply open with "in the news" which is water into the newspaper and back out without the newspaper getting wet
Denny shared and crafted an elegant way to begin a program with that effect (Denny believes begin the program with the stage clean and end the program with the stage clean, I personally don't do either)

I took the germ of an idea he shared, kept it and ran with it
I thought where would I be reading a newspaper?
Being raised by my grandparents we always read the newspaper at the breakfast table or the dinner table
OK I've got dinner and I've got a newspaper
What if I flip that about a bit and I'm preparing a dinner
What magic is available for a dinner?

I don't like any of the latex or foam food pieces
so I thought about setting the dinner table
Candles roses wine
Things that you associate with dinner
got those magically covered

Simple things like write what you know
One has a life and interests
they may be Star Wars, Game of Thrones, geology or whatever

Think how you make that relatable to your audience and build a routine
For me personally it's all about that space it's created during the performance

How you transport the audience
and that is done with good effects and effective, relatable and creative writing

You can disagree but the trick itself is not enough
You have to have a relatable and likable routine and character.
Yes I have a gift for the obviousIllusions By Vickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08339857775739209467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8112859778891740203.post-85358992629850625842017-04-21T14:11:00.001-04:002017-04-21T14:26:55.653-04:00Illusions by Vick Resume 2017

* = repeat clients and venues with multiple performances
In 2017 am thrilled to be performing the Illusions by Vick show
(stage and parlor) 200+ times at public and private events and venues. Run time is approximately 45 minutes.

Professional performing experience early in my career included some
very
challenging and rewarding situations. For 3 years I was the lead
entertainer at Muvico Theaters (now Cinemark) a 24 screen multiplex with
an
approximately 6,400 patron seating capacity in Arundel Mills, Maryland.
Was
featured warming up and entertaining movie going patrons before the
feature film
began, performing up to 25 times a
day, 3 days a week. The entertainment was magic based and included
skits, stand
up comedy, character acting and story telling. Many leading
characters from featured movies were brought to life for patron's
entertainment including Professor
Snape, Willie Wonka, Captain Hook, Pirates and various medieval
characters. We
created all our own material including scripts, costuming and staging.
While it was a great experience I left after 3 years as I had
accomplished all I felt I
could in that venue.

For 6 months in 2008 I was the featured illusionist for the Golden Triangle Cabaret on M Street at Club
Ozio in Washington DC. The Golden Triangle Cabaret is a 1940's theme Burlesque
Review. While the show was being performed weekly I was performing two or three
10 to 12 minutes spots of magic during each performance. The featured burlesque
artist left and the show moved to a monthly performance schedule. At that time I chose to
leave the ensemble.

These challenging venues were instrumental in developing abilities and learning to provide the best entertainment for an
audience in unique situations.

A short description of self, study and influences- Unique
(aren't we all), resourceful, responsible, honest, determined, hardworking,
adventurous, occasionally charming and reasonably well spoken. I'm driven by a
sincere desire to share unique entertainment experiences while elevating the art of
magic. To help return the art to the lofty
standards and high regard it was once held in. Am always learning and eager to
learn more. The works of Sam H. Sharpe have been a huge influence on my magic and performing (as well as the Fitzkie Trilogy,
"Our Magic", the works of Tommy Wonder, Robert-Houdin and Henning Nelms "Magic
and Showmanship". There are many schools of thought and great ideas.
Have been incredibly fortunate to be given guidance by an enigmatic
figure (an actual card man) whose name I obviously cannot mention and to whom I
am extremely grateful. Also the very talented and respected Denny Haney has been
kind enough to assist with direction in the art (and putting up with my
questions). As part of my continuing education I regularly attend lectures, some of my
favorites being Joanie Spina, Michael Weber, Richard Osterlind, Banachek, John
Carney (twice), Darwin Ortiz, Michael Ammar, Axel Hecklau, Howie Schwartzman, Christopher
Bolter, and Christian Painter. Was extremely fortunate to have
worked briefly with Joanie Spina as a director. She made a huge, positive impact on my
work, enhanced how I create and view the art of magic. She was an amazing talent, director, teacher and humanitarian.
Most of the influences on my work and performing come from outside of
the world of magic and include film, literature and music. Create something that
engages minds, enables viewers to think and feel and you have created art.

What you receive when hiring Illusions by Vick - First
and foremost, working (with you) to create an amazing, fun and unique entertainment
experience. An experience the audience will always remember. A performance that
will meet and exceed your expectations. All my experience, determination, heart and talent go into creating, performing and
providing you and your guests with a unique, fun, sophisticated and amazing
entertainment experience.
Every performance is more than just my dream and career, it's my name and
reputation on the line. More than that it's yours. How well I perform, the
fun and amazement the show shares is the art. How well you and your guests enjoy it
and will have Illusions by Vick back next year, the years after and recommend
Illusions by Vick is part of the business. I understand the importance of both
the entertainment/artistic side and the business side and am able bring them
together. I have to succeed at both for us to be satisfied. When you pull back
the curtain and peek you see that sometimes show business = 10% show + 90%
business.

Ozio in Washington DC. The Golden Triangle Cabaret is a 1940’s theme Burlesque

I’m driven by a
sincere desire to share unique entertainment experiences while elevating the art of

What you receive when hiring Illusions by Vick – First
and foremost, working (with you) to create an amazing, fun and unique entertainment
experience. An experience the audience will always remember. A performance that
will meet and exceed your expectations. All my experience, determination, heart and talent go into creating, performing and
providing you and your guests with a unique, fun, sophisticated and amazing
entertainment experience.
Every performance is more than just my dream, it’s my name and
reputation on the line. More than that it’s yours. How well I perform and the
fun and amazement around the show is the art.
When you pull back
the curtain and peek you see that sometimes show business = 10% show + 90%
business.

Illusions By Vickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08339857775739209467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8112859778891740203.post-46056182615347418152014-07-17T20:19:00.003-04:002014-07-18T02:13:12.235-04:00My story as magicianBelow please find some writing from a few years back I came across today..... Am often asked how I become a magician. This will explain part of it, was in Vegas for a convention. I was an adult, already established in a successful career (marketing director for 12 years) and had to go to Vegas every year for a convention. Don't enjoy gaming that much so I was strolling through the mall at the Venetian when I got sucked in by 2 demonstrators at Houdini's Magic Shop. Here I am fourteen years later in 2014 ........

Many magicians have the story about seeing a magician when they were
about 7 years old and being impressed, and/or getting a magic set for
a Holiday gift and doing their first show at a tender age,
around 10, 11 or 12 (usually they admit to it being a learning
experience).

In my case magic found me, as
an adult. After about 3 years of magic being a hobby (and forcing poor
quality magic on family and friends) I was fortunate to work in some of
the toughest, most challenging circumstances. Yes, fortunate to work in
hard places. It made me a much better performer. Jumped into the
deep end and it was sink or swim. Luckily I learned to swim quickly.

This allows the Illusions by Vick show to be different, my
formative years weren't spent focused on magic. It's wasn't a
introspective time. I was able to experience life without the limitations of an all consuming hobby.

Some magicians and their acts are influenced by those experiences and learning
magic at 10 (sadly some stay there, never progressing any further. I don't like props that look like magic props and why do so many
"tricks" have to be about dismemberment or potential danger to the magician, assistant or audience member when you know they are never in any real danger?) where I had the advantage of having life experience,
being a complete person, versed in many different areas including the arts.

That is part of why the Illusions by Vick show is a bit different. There are real life experiences to draw from to craft the show. Experiences that happened to me and very
possibly to you, the audience. Making the magic come together, to come alive,
to weave a story instead of just magic tricks being presented with an out of the box spiel that was bought with the trick.

Mix in influences from literature, music, history, cinema and other thought provoking
interests crafts a more well rounded show.

That is part of what allows me to be something other than
your typical "rabbit out of a hat" magician.

Another part is I wear my performing heart on my sleeve, every show means so much
to me. You've trusted me with your most special moments, there is a sincere obligation to make your event special with the
magical entertainment we experience. When you bring Illusions by Vick into your events, into the most special times in your lives I owe you a great deal including the utmost courtesy, professionalism and and an amazing show with a lot of fun and audience interaction. Something to wow you in the here and now and something you take with you to help create great memories.

I often become very fond of the client <and guests=""> before the show.
We email back and forth, talk on the telephone. I get to know the client and audience a little before the show ever happens, they are allowing me to
share a special time in their lives. Very often clients become friends. That is one of the best parts of my career as a magician. People who began as strangers become clients and end up as friends. There isn't a week I don't get an email from someone I've performed for in the past. I sincerely enjoy that, it's heartwarming and very special to me. </and>

It's an honor (and again flattering) when clients specifically find me and request Illusions by Vick. Often it's because they want something more or different than a
"normal" magician. Think that is part of why I am fortunate
to often be hired to entertain for 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th and up to 99th
Birthday Celebrations, for special anniversaries as well as many special occasions, unique and unusual shows, for college and corporate events.
Yes, magic is for adults and we need it more than
children.
(I'll never deny magic to younger audiences, there is something up my proverbial sleeve for almost everyone).

Thanks for the ear (and eyes)

Please be well.

Best wishes from your Magician,
As great as it is to see children laughing and a spark of imagination light up in their eyes I've often thought
ADULTS NEED MAGIC THE MOST! Adults most need their imaginations sparked, their funny bones tickled, their perspectives refreshed and their hearts touched. Adults appreciate a celebration where all their concerns are forgotten. Immersed in a beautiful, funny, amazing and unique art form and entertainment experience.
Magic is an incredible art form, Where but in magic can an artist share miracles, enable others to laugh, to think and feel a spectrum of emotions? A journey into the incredible.
A good magician/performer will create and share an atmosphere where anything can and might happen, where the boundaries of normal existence fade away and our minds are wide open.
This is entertainment for everyone.
I talk about this often and struggle against the typical "magician" stereotype. It came to my attention again today speaking with a client, (very nice woman) and she said "I thought magicians were for 5 year old children's birthday parties" Nothing could be further from the truth.
I don't recommend a magician for any gathering of only children under 6 years of age. A clown/character who can paint faces, make balloon animals and maybe do a few "tricks", that's a great fit. Not the right fit for a magician (illusionist or mentalist).
Forget the stereotypes and open your mind to amazing, fun, engaging and enlightening entertainment.
Am in awe of the positive responses from the organizers and guests. Everyone please forgive me as I haven't had the opportunity to send thank you emails but will over the next 2 days.

Everything from an Amazing Rock N Blues festival, a beautiful family birthdays and masters degree celebration, 2 Professor Snape performances, first birthday celebrations, a great Boy Scout Summer Camp Performance, a really, really cool graduation celebration performing as the Mad Hatter (they even changed the date of the party so it would fit my performance schedule and I could be there to perform for them, am so glad they did. I've never experienced a more appreciative audience) , a perfectly planned graduation celebration with wonderful people and I taught a week long magic class at a summer camp (which was a very rewarding and special experience)

At one point we did 4 shows and one class is 3 days, not unusual until you factor in we drove over 600 miles to be able to do it

What did all these celebration have in common? They were all beautiful, heartfelt expressions of love and admiration. They were all great events! People from all walks of life celebrating meaningful events in their lives. I'm honored they chose Illusions by Vick to be a small part of their special days

Every time I take the stage I'll give you EVERYTHING I have, every bit of ability, planning and experience and more importantly EVERY BIT OF HEART and imagination to make your special occasion even more memorable and special

A very special thanks to Christina Vukov!!! I would have NEVER been able to do it without you. I love you sweetheart, thanks for all your help and support

Am incredibly fortunate to have the career I do, thank you everyone. For your support, believing in me and allowing me to be a small part of the most special moments in your lives.

I promise to keep creating and sharing with you the best, most amazing, imaginative and heartfelt magical entertainment experiences
Thank you again!Illusions By Vickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08339857775739209467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8112859778891740203.post-17199035110709447042012-06-09T12:40:00.000-04:002012-06-09T12:40:12.363-04:00Heart and MindAs entertainers we create and share special moments, at our best we touch peoples lives (in different ways, sometimes it's a laugh or a smile. At our best it's shedding light on a new perspective) and in turn they enrich ours.
I'll never be the best in the world at sleights (pure sleight of hand, I can do ok), my strength lies in putting my heart and imagination in the show. Through the heart and mind is the way for me to create an entertaining place in time.
One of the most important lessons Denny Haney & Henning Nelms taught me is I can't be Copperfield, Penn & Teller or Tommy Wonder. Those jobs are already taken ... but they can't be me.
I can be the best me possible and that includes putting all my heart and mind into every performance.
every show is very, very meaningful to me.
It will never be just another show or a "day at the office"
There is a drive, a desire and a sincere obligation to
every client, every audience to make the event special
with the magical entertainment presented.
I often become quite fond of the audience
(and guests) before the show.
We email back and forth, talk on the telephone.
I have the pleasure of getting to know the audience,
the guest of honor a little before the show.
They are allowing me to share a special time in their lives.

For corporate clients I learn about the company,
the people, their products and services and
incorporate that into the performance
(when and where appropriate)

They have chosen me to help celebrate
and in a small way be a part of their most special occasions.
It's an honor (and flattering) when clients come to me
specifically asking for or because they want something
more or different than a "normal" magician.
Yes magic is for adults too ..
... and we need it more than children!

This is part of what feeds my concern with reaching the audience, connecting with them, creating and sharing something that enables them to smile, think and feel.
Am very fortunate to have the career I do and take nothing for granted
Thank you Illusions By Vickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08339857775739209467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8112859778891740203.post-50058332176881127472012-05-04T12:26:00.003-04:002012-05-04T13:43:09.325-04:00Magic's New Renaissance PeriodIn Maryland, DC and Northern Virgina magical entertainment is going through a very special Renaissance period. Due the work of performers like Michael Cantor, Peter Wood, Mike Rose, Eric Henning, Dick Kohl and others (Illusions by Vick included) quality magical entertainment is being brought to, seen by and enjoyed by a wider audience (including more adult and corporate audiences). Magic is being taken seriously as entertainment and as an art form. This is a very special time for magicians and audiences, while I compete with these men I also admire and applause their efforts, every time I hear of them performing another show, amazing another audience it's a good thing for us all as audiences are having a quality entertainment expereince and will want more in the future.

We all share a love of the art, a commitment to our audiences and to bring quality magical entertainment and amazing experiences to as many as we can. Enriching the audience's lives and in turn enriching ours by the experiences we share and what we receive from our audiences.
When starting out I sought out challenging circumstances.

For a year I was a hawker for Magic Zone, basically a kiosk (in malls and heavy traffic tourist areas) selling D-Lites, UFO's, sponge balls plus a few other items. I was getting paid to rehearse 8 hours a day, I learned to draw a crowd there.

After that for 3 years I was part of the live entertainment at a Movie Theater Multi-plex (24 screens).

For 6 months I was the featured Illusionist in a 1940's theme weekly burlesque review at a nightclub in Washington, DC. Imagine being the magician on before the very popular featured burlesque artist, in front of inebriated patrons, in a DC nightclub where patrons are paying $40 for a seat. 2- 3 times nightly. I was lucky and it went well.

None of those 3 positions paid extremely well but .....

The key thing is, these challenging situations gave me great experience that you can't get any other way.

Wild? ... maybe ... Rewarding? ... beyond measure
Illusions By Vickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08339857775739209467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8112859778891740203.post-46820897452601392892012-03-11T11:07:00.017-04:002012-03-30T18:30:32.343-04:00Thinking about hiring a magician? What does a magician cost?Often I get calls or email from prospective clients asking about my services as a magician. They may have never hired live entertainment before so they might mot have an idea what a magician's fees are. The prospective client may be thinking they are hiring an hour (in my case the stage or parlor show is 45+ minutes) of my services so maybe it's like other skilled trades, mechanic, plumber or the like. Well..... when you hire Illusions by Vick you get a lot more than the 45 minutes.

Please allow me to pull back the curtain a little,
for the average client we send 8 emails back and forth discussing your event,
(plus time on the phone, I am always available to share experience, to answer questions, take requests or suggestions). This is some of the best times with a cleint, we get to know each other, I get to learn about special people and this time helps develop a special show just for your event
1 to 2 hours goes into developing the set for your show
I spend about 5-6 hours in rehearsal for each event,
plus drive time back and forth (let's say 30 minutes each way),
About one hour setting up before the performance.
Then the 45+ minutes for your show
About 30 - 45 minutes after the show cleaning up, loading out and speaking with guests
Conservatively speaking that's 10 hours devoted to each performance

That's before the 12 years training and intense study (lot of lectures, working with a director and many, many books). That's before all the specialized equipment.

For every show I use about $40 in combustibles/expendables (Among other things I purchase a dozen roses for almost every show even though I may only use 2 or 3).

Add in assorted operating expenses, gas (I drive a 32+ MPG car for many shows), maintenance, maintenance of equipment, insurance, liability insurance (other performers might not carry liability insurance, I do due to the venues I perform in and it's what professional performers have to do) and other assorted operating costs (dry cleaning, costumes and so on) .

Could I be that guy that goes around with a set show for every audience, who shows up 15 minutes before the performance, doesn't use combustibles/expendables and doesn't have special equipment?
NO! The performance would not be the same and I can't do anything less than a special, quality show....

Not every performer makes the same commitment to their clients, sad to say.

I hope you see the difference, you can read what clients have written about Illusions by Vick here or Google "Illusions by Vick"
I consider myself very lucky to have had such warm and truly wonderful experiences performing ... but that is the goal, to enhance a special event. It's part of why the show is the way it is.

One thing that can't be measured in cost is the amount of heart that goes into every show.

I understand some people in these challenging economic times may be on a budget and my services might not be the right fit for them. For these clients I recommend other options (I try to help everyone get the best possible entertainment program, even if it isn't Illusions by Vick) just be honest with me, it's nothing to be embarrassed about.

I hope this helped someone shopping for entertainment have a better understanding and perspective of what goes into your show.

Please always know, Illusions by Vick is here for you.
One of my goals regardless of who performs for you is in the end trying to make certain you have the best possible entertainment experience .... and that is priceless ;-)Illusions By Vickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08339857775739209467noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8112859778891740203.post-61457031612409287742012-03-03T14:10:00.021-05:002012-03-03T14:54:38.029-05:00The Magician Sits Down .. The Magician Stands upI was privileged to have one of the most beautiful moments of magic ever in one of my shows last night ...... and I didn't perform it.
I had been hired to perform 45 minutes parlor(magical entertainment) at a 50th Birthday Celebration. The gentleman (Eugene) who hired me to perform for his wife's 50th birthday celebration and I had been communicating in email, along the way I suggested if he had a small present to present I could show him a magical way to present it. He liked the idea. We took a few minutes before the show to go over the presentation, I believe he had be practicing on his own(when I gave instruction on where to place it he made a remark that lead me to think he had been trying on his own).
I brought Eugene and his wife Katherine up to perform Anniversary Waltz (a card trick that can be a beautiful, fun moment) and when I was done Eugene said he had a trick that might top mine. (I sat down and directed a person with a video camera to a good spot for their special moment)

He did it perfectly, when the flash died away there was a very, very beautiful ring hanging from his hand on a fine chain. There was an amazing outpouring of love and joy, not just from his wife but from everyone present (about 30 guests). The laughter, applause, love and hugs went on all night as part of this very special celebration

If you wanted to imagine the perfect party, I nominate this evening. My words can't adequately describe the life and love that infused this event. It doesn't suffice to say that Ukrainians know how to party. There were at least 4 people there who were good piano players, a group of about 10 women got up and danced, sharp minds and great food & drink (I only tried the homemade cranberry vodka and I never ever drink at a show). These people define joie de vivre.

There is a lot more to these wonderful people then I will go into here but again .....
It was one of the most beautiful moments ever in my show ... and all I had to do was sit and enjoy!

Sometimes I say I perform because it makes others better people (when someone is laughing, enjoying themselves, amazed or having fun that is about the best someone can be), last night they made me a better person.Illusions By Vickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08339857775739209467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8112859778891740203.post-20053242631963310322012-02-16T09:41:00.004-05:002012-04-16T00:05:54.250-04:00Creative Capital .... RANT.....Creative Capital (which I think is a wonderful and much needed organization) provides grants to worthwhile artists to produce work.

Here is the list of performing art from their website
Performing Arts may include dance, dance-theater, experimental music performance,
interdisciplinary, multimedia performance, music-theater, non-traditional opera, performance art, puppetry, spoken word and theater. The focus is on the live performing arts.

Notice any performing art missing? NO MAGIC or MAGICIANS , yes there is puppetry but no magic??!!!
Magic (and magicians) has the ability to be the most demanding, beautiful and unique of all arts. Where else can you share an amazing expereince with an audience and then get them to laugh, think and engage their sense of wonder

So ..... Saturday was my first Blue and Gold of this year. There was a young girl of about 6 in attendance, she was very interested in the pre-show. During the show I gave her the rose I use in "Dinner". At the end of the show after I packed up the same little girl finds me, face covered in green icing, has the biggest smile in the world, looks up at me for a minute then opens her arms for me to give her a hug.

One of the Scoutmasters walks up to me after the show and said "You did something we can't do", I asked him what that was, he responded "Kept their attention for 45 minutes"

Upon opening my email the following morning I found an email from the Scoutmaster who found and hired me for their Blue and Gold, it read"Thank you much for providing our entertainment for blue & gold yesterday! I have received countless verbal, email, & Facebook comments on how great you were! The boys were enthralled, engaged, & entertained! One of our best yet! I quote Sherlock Holmes (Doyle) "Eliminate the impossible and what is left, however improbable, is the truth".
For me if more than 10% are thinking "how I did...." then my presentation isn't quite right

Yes I perform real magic. It's not the effects on stage. It's being the conduit to an audience having a good time, forgetting what grinds them on a day to day basis and instead putting a smile on their faces. Whether it's a laugh, a moment of wonder or enjoyment. When that happens in the audience, that's where the magic takes place. That's why the audience does the magic, not me.
That's (part of) what being an entertainer is about, at least for me.
Think what you will about that, even call it cheap magic. If it's cheap magic, then it's all I have and it's plenty good enough for me. In fact it's about the best thing I can do.Illusions By Vickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08339857775739209467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8112859778891740203.post-73432804409585489542011-12-04T23:57:00.001-05:002011-12-04T23:58:44.689-05:00CreativitySometimes creativity is a 100 ton boulder we try to push uphill with only our minds, other times creativity is a river that flows through usIllusions By Vickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08339857775739209467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8112859778891740203.post-55980211846191827482011-12-04T19:38:00.002-05:002011-12-04T19:41:31.940-05:00Random ThoughtAm thinking more about writing on the subject of magic, to leave a legacy of sorts ...
Will try here for now, am sure I'll repeat myself from time to time

What is magic? It isn't about tricks, it's about creating an experience for the audience, about connecting with them. Creating and sharing wonder, amazement and fun. Creating a unique atmosphere where anything can and does happen. If the audience spends most of their time thinking "how did he do that" the performer missed the boat.

Magic isn't about "fooling" anyone, not many like to be fooled and the magicians who can "fool" an audience and have them enjoy it are very rare.

Magic is NEVER about the performer (or "magician") however the performer has a huge obligation to the audience. To give them something amazing, something special in a way no one else can.Illusions By Vickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08339857775739209467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8112859778891740203.post-47756790391288797642011-12-02T18:27:00.004-05:002011-12-04T19:44:17.338-05:00From Simple thoughts on RoutiningA discussion was going on a magicians site and I posted the following, am thinking to write more here so I thought this wouldn't be a bad way to add

My show is a little different by design, in the first routine I perform a variation of the "Floating Rose" (no dancing paper in mine) which is a very strong effect and usually elicits a good response. It appears in the opening routine along with appearing candles, water to wine, in the news (newspaper water pour). It's all part of a story about my date arriving 45 minutes ..... early and I have to magic the table together. It's performed to string quartet music, the floating, flaming then real rose makes a strong statement (I always hand the rose out to an audience member). It makes a statement about me, the show, the magic and what the audience can expect. It's an odd choice but for me it works

I close the show with my version of "Floating Butterflies" not the strongest effect ever but it is very beautiful and that's how I want the audience to remember the show (it does usually get 2 awws or gasps). Big, amazing, beautiful and colorful (plus if children are in attendance they almost always clean up the butterflies, I've seen people post pic of butterflies they kept). Worst part is I once overheard an audience member after the show saying "I expected him to produce real butterflies" I don't think the magic is that strong and it does give me an idea but .......

As for transitions, I'm always speaking with the audience into the next effect, leading them into it and there is a flow and connection throughout the show. I'm not comedy club funny and know it so I don't do straight up comedy but I can be humorous and that comes through a few times.

I have that problem with ebb and flow, it can't be a constant rise but I never want a piece that isn't strong or good enough to stand on it's own outside of the frame of the show. So the show becomes sort of layered and textured, with maybe softer spots or a change of tempo. Helps keep the mind fresh, both mine and the audience. You can't listen to the same beat (even house or rave music, which I don't understand) without loosing attention.

The only thing I wonder about Brian is if a performer has a few card tricks to group them together in the show. I guess for some it would be ok but I've seen say 3-4 card tricks bunched together in a show and the show started to lose me a little then. It also might have to do with the presentation and the effects that were chosen.

and that's the short of it from Illusions by VickIllusions By Vickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08339857775739209467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8112859778891740203.post-67870685280097501302011-11-25T22:33:00.013-05:002011-11-25T23:25:33.905-05:00Why? Performing arts ....Often the first thing that comes to mind when seeing a magician perform is ..... why? Why are they doing what they are doing, what are they trying to communicate, are they reaching me in some manner? Do they make me think, feel, laugh? If not then why not? That's part of the challenge with a lot of magic, there is no why, no logic, no story, no reason, to attempt to engage the audience, to capture their imagination and hearts, even with a simple plot .

Magic is a PERFORMING ART, it is LIVE THEATER. Too often it's just someone standing there doing something I'm supposed to be amazed by. Look at the big box tricks of a typical Vegas show, if there is no build up or story then why are they sawing a woman in parts for the 12,000,000,000th time? How am I supposed to care if they catch fire, get blown up or suffer dismemberment if I don't care about them first?

There are a very few manipulation acts that can entrance you and amaze you with with just their manipulations. Rocco Silano comes to mind. Even so his work has structure, a flow, it has heart and watching Rocco you can't help but like him. The average magician would benefit with more thought to the why of what they are doing, look at it from the audience point of view. Unless you are there is no reason for you to be on stage. For 98% of performers the audience doesn't care how good your sleights are until they care about you.

We live in an age of CGI where ANYTHING is possible on the movie, television and computer screen. Magic must capture the attention of the audience, engage them on some level, emotionally or mentally. We as magicians have an advantage television, movies and computers don't! We are there live with the audience, we have to build on that, take advantage of it. Not ignore the possibilities and just do a bunch of tricks strung together with no heart or logic.

Think about the best and your favorite magicians, why are they your favorite? Chances are it's personality and the effects they choose to allow that personality to come through. Great magicians consider that when structuring their show, when choosing material to present.

That's why everything Illusions by Vick does on stage has a story wrapped around it, even if it's just a homage to those who went before. I want the audience to be amazed, to laugh and have a great time but I also want them to think and feel, to be engaged emotionality and intellectually. I've said it many times but Edward Norton as Eisenhiem in the movie "The Illusionist" had more emotion in just one arm gesture than many magicians do in their entire show

For magic to be taken seriously as a performance art magicians MUST get better at performance skills and realize it ALWAYS is about the audience and the experience they share and create and NEVER about the magician. If you are a magician and not doing this.............. you're letting your audience down, all the magicians who went before and will come after and worst of all your are letting yourself downIllusions By Vickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08339857775739209467noreply@blogger.com0
